WA Chapter of VHPA
March 25, 2006
Meeting Minutes
Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association
Meeting & Briefing at American Lake Club Ft. Lewis, WA.
Subject: Minutes of
business meeting and other notes of interest.
The meeting was 10:00 to noon with the business meeting
from 11:30-noon.
1. Dick
Glasgow, New chapter president, opened the meeting with a welcome to guests and
visit from LTC. Haroldson (Ret. US Army Medical Corp Helicopter pilot RVN ’65).
Don Ice introduced Louis Mizell a real “dust off” pilot who became our latest
new member.
2.
Dick, introduced our guest speaker Captain Harry York, a CH47 pilot and
“Battle Captain” of the aviation group, had just returned from a tour of duty in
Afghanistan. He showed the members a series of pictures taken during of recent
operations and provided considerable background on many of the shots of the AO.
He also provided a highly-appreciated briefing of our “current war” pilots
operating and fighting in an ancient rough land.
3. Our
“Soldiers Breakfast” was consumed in short order along with conversation.
Old Business:
- Skip Blaksley treasures’ report for today is
$5,050 before expenses for the meal were deducted.
- Secretary summarized the last meetings lengthy
report.
(Only On-going & New
Business will be read at the meetings.)
New Business:
- Dick explained that our recently elected VP Steve is
now unable to fulfill that obligation and we need to vote to either move
someone up the line or elect another man. Chris Farwell agreed to move from
Senior Member at large to VP to fill this need, voted on and approved.
Paul Fleming moved from Junior to senior member at large. David Eck was
nominated & approved as the new junior member at large.
- Dick went on to explain the duties of planning and
setting up future meetings would fall on more of the other officers of the
board. Dick also thanked past presidents and leaders for their great help in
setting up this meeting while he was recovering from a new medical problem.
- Dick would like to see our group set up a scholarship
fund giving maybe $500 to a member’s family for an accredited school
program. Other suggestions are:
- The Fisher Housing for injured veteran’s families
visiting MAMC.
- Possible other veterans or organizations that
support veterans.
- Bill Vaughn said we need a proposal of details for
this program, Dick asked all members to send ideas and info to him. (As
of May 10th no suggestions have been received).
- The next meeting will be June 17th, which
is also Fathers Day at Olympia Airport and air show. The October meeting may
be held at Chris Farwell’s hanger, TBA, when decided.
- Frank Jones asked if we could make a donation to the
support for the new eastern WA. Veteran’s cemetery’s upkeep. This would give
us some visibility to help start an eastern WA group.
- Meeting concluded.
Other event notes of interest:
- The VA officially recognizes prostate cancer as caused
by Agent Orange. Vets diagnosed with prostate cancer are eligible for 100%
disability. They and their family can get more help from the VA with a
prostate cancer diagnosis as well as being able to receive some funds with
his subsequent death. Every vet should have an annual PSA test. These can be
done at the nearest VA facility. Prostate cancer is treatable and curable if
caught in time. Every vet should know his PSA number.
- Dave Murray handed out fliers for the Officer/Warrant
Officer Association Local chapter that will be meeting at Pacific Shores
April 28-30 2006.
- Doug Decker asked our lady guest to select the winning
number for the “Door prize” from his VHPA hat, Don Ice won the prize book.
Also, reminded everyone about the 2006 national VHPA meeting. Make plans to
attend now as it's filling up fast.
- Visit the organization web site for photos and
notices.
