After over 41 years our own VHPA member Bruce P. Crandall, now age 74, is to
be awarded the nation's highest military decoration--The Medal of Honor.
In a Whitehouse ceremony to be held Feb 26th 2007, President Bush will award former
Lt. Col. Crandall the award he so rightly deserves. For more details on the
decoration see this site.
This is not the first decoration been awarded to Colonel Crandall. Others
include: the Distinguished Service Cross (to be upgraded to Medal of Honor);
Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster; Bronze Star Medal;
Meritorious Service Medal; Air Medal (24 awards); Army Commendation Medal;
Purple Heart; National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster; Armed
Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal (four campaigns); Republic of
Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device; Presidential Unit Citation; Meritorious
Unit Citation; Master Army Aviator Badge; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Gold
Star (three awards) and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. We've included a
story written by Joseph L. Galloway that makes
it clear what went on in Vietnam's central highlands around Pleiku in November
of 1965. Yes, this is the heroic story told by the movie "We Were Brothers".
We're proud to have Bruce as a member of the VHPA Washington State Chapter.
Just in: We received links to a number of videos of Bruce Crandall from
YouTube.
"By the Orders of Their Own
Heart" a narrative by Joe Galloway a war correspondent that describes the
events on 14 November 1965 in the Audrang valley.
"Eye to Eye: Bruce
Crandall on his medal of honor" an interview by CBS with Bruce about his
Medal of Honor.
Several other videos are available on
YouTube
that illuminate the courage and sacrifice made by Bruce and the others that
served in the air and on the ground.
